A nature´s wonder

Flowering
Flowers
Green bulbs
Dried bulbs
Cotton and seeds
Relative size
Ceiba boliviana, over here known as "paineira-rosa", occurs on a vast territory including Brasil, Bolivia and Paraguay. It has a very particular way of spreading its seeds. After pollination, big "bulbs" are formed. They contain the seeds that are surrounded by a cotton bed. Once the bulbs dry, they open up and the wind then takes care of flying "cotton parachutes" with seeds inside them. If they fall over an appropriate ground, the cotton provides shelter and humidity for the seeds to germinate and thus the species is preserved. It took more than a year (and many many photos) to finish this series. I hope you enjoy it!

The birds belong to the family Trigonidae, and the genus is Trogon v. viridis. The male is on pictures 1, 3 & 8, while the female is on picture 5. Their habitat is the brazilian Atlantic Forest. The popular name is "Saracuá-grande-de-barriga-amarela" (Big yellow belly Saracuá). They usually gather in groups. This one had about 10 birds.

Right now I am reading the book "River Of Doubt," about Roosevelt's trip in South America. Fascinating stuff; not just his story, but the descriptions of that place. Someday I should visit.

Hi, Click! Thanks for your comment; I got a chuckle out of it.
Are these fotos more views from right there in your back yard? I hope so ~ that would mean that life is very, very good for you!
Cheers, friend.

Tu as vraiment de la chance d'avoir un aussi beau jardin botanique dans ta ville. Tu y as trouvé des merveilles. J'adore les grands nenuphars ( comme des plateaux) J'ai jamais vu cela de ma vie.
Bravo ! Tu sais mettre en valeur ces magnifiques plantes avec beaucoup d'émotion.

Hello, Marvin.

Since Fotopages doesn't show us xtra hi-res fotos, it's hard to see if the clarity is great. Are you happy with the results from that lens?
